Bus
The city's main bus station is located just to the north of the Guilin Railway Station. Express coaches and overnight sleeper coaches arrive and depart from this station. The coach network links Guilin with major cities in Guangxi and surrounding provinces. All those express coaches are comfortable, air-conditioned and have seatbelts fitted. Be careful of your belongings being stolen on overnight coaches. Tickets are obtained from the bus station.
Buses to Yangshuo, Longsheng and Xing’an leave from the Guilin Long Distance Bus Station, about 10 minutes walk north of the Guilin Railway Station. These buses are a little more expensive (Price:15-20 RMB to Yangshuo) than private buses, but they are faster as they don’t stop for passengers along the way, and always have a movie, air conditioning provided. Tickets are always easy to get as there are plenty of departures times, Bus departing from the bus station to Yangshuo is called: Direct or Non-stop Bus which means it won’t stop to take passengers on the way and all the passengers get on the bus at the station. Different from the direct bus, the ticket price of the private buses which are waiting at the parking lot of the South Railway Station and leaving for Yangshuo is a bit cheaper, but those buses’ condition are usually worse and you may be unluckily enough to find locals smoke and talk loudly. And those buses always make many stops along the way just to pick up more passengers.
Note: No staff speaks English in the bus station and the departure time is only announced in Chinese so you need to pay special attention to the departure time of your bus. Get to the station at least 20 minutes earlier to get acquainted with the surroundings.
Public Bus
Most of the city’s public buses pass the South Railway Station and the Long Distance Bus Station. The ticket fare is 1 RMB for normal bus and 2 RMB for air-conditioning bus (No. 99 and Tourist Bus No.1).
The air-conditioned Tourist Bus No.1 was a newly opened tourist line which serves most of the city’s main tourist attractions including the Elephant Trunk Hill, Fubo Hill, and Folded Brocade Hill. This bus is always not crowded even at rush hour as most of the locals just choose the other cheaper public bus. Each bus has an attendant onboard.
Taxis and Bike
Taxis are relatively inexpensive compared to the larger cities. Most taxis in the city are air-conditioned and available 24 hours a day. They use a meter and can be hailed on the street or found in front of most hotels. Bicycles can be rented by the day at hotels throughout Guilin (15-20 RMB) and at many cafes, hostels and street corners in Yangshuo (10-20 RMB).
