Longsheng is a multi-ethnic autonomous Country in northwest Guilin, where 10 minorities cluster, including the Zhuang, Yao, Miao, and Dong, etc. Each minority has its own folk culture, but one thing they have in common is their love of singing. Every year, the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar calendar month is the 'San Yue San' Festival. A grand singing fair is set to be held for the celebration, known as Lunar March 3rd Song Fair. By that time, the spectacular terraced fields area of Longsheng is alive with the sound of folk music.

Indeed, The singing fair is a festival gathering centered on the themes of love and good life. Everyone will don their best costumes and sing folk songs together. They first offer sacrifices to the Singing Goddess - Sanjie Liu, for more singing talent. Next, the singing competition begins. Young people get acquainted by singing love and question songs. Traditionally, if a young girl find the boy she likes, she will throw him a Xiuqiu to let him know how she feels.

For the festival, the five-colored glutinous rice prevails widely among Zhuang and Miao people. The five colors - black, grey, and yellow, purple and white - of the sticky rice are extracted from leaves, flowers, grass and roots etc. Then, steam the rice with lotus leaves for one hour to give it a special fragrance. People believe that the five-colored rice symbolizes an abundant harvest.
